On October 11, Bert Newton spoke to the parable of the wedding banquet from Matthew 22:1-14.

In Bert’s words:
Jesus tells a parable about a banquet of justice that the upper classes fail to attend. The result is the destruction of their city. In many ways the well-to-do and privileged and powerful of our society have largely been absent from the feast of justice, and it has led to many of the problems that now plague us. The good news is that we have so many ways that we can answer the call to attend this banquet.
Questions for Discussion:
- How has NOT attending the banquet of justice led to the problems that we are dealing with now? (In the parable, not answering the invitation results in destruction of the city.)
- Do we attend individually or collectively, and what does that look like?
.
Watch the video below as Bert expands on the context of the parable, shaped by the Gospel writer in the late first century – the years of the great Jewish uprising against Rome — as well as what the invitation might mean to us today. (Note: there’s a delay at the beginning, so wait for the start.)
