The Stairwell of Love

“Spiral Staircase,” photograph by Martin Copta

This week, Rob leads us through Jesus’s journey down the “Stairwell of Love.” Beginning with Philippians 2:1-11, Rob shows us how Jesus begins a descent out of love and obedience. This loving journey down this stairwell is mirrored in the days of Jesus’s crucifixion. Jesus moves from the top of the staircase, likeness with God, divinity, and moves through humanity, betrayal, arrest, denial, dissertation, and eventually crucifixion and into the grave.

This path, Rob notes, is the path of discipleship, of a life laid down for one another, and it is coupled with a staircase out of the grave. But, for now, we move toward the cross, encountered by Jesus’s love, fully shown in his life. Rob leaves us these questions to consider:

  1. How has Jesus’s love shaped you?
  2. Where do these scriptures and themes take you emotionally?
  3. Biblical ideas of obedience and sacrifice have been misused in horrific ways to justify injustice and abuse. What helps you see and embrace obedience and sacrifice in ways that connect genuinely to Jesus’ love?
